Last month, the Global Game Jam 2024 kicked off with a theme of "Make me laugh!". I was encouraged to participate by a developer on one of my discord indie dev channels and found a location near me in Central IL hosted by IDGA (International Game Developers’ Association) of Champaign-Urbana. If you're not familiar with game jams or the global game jam, here is a link with more details: https://globalgamejam.org/presskit
I joined a team of 3 other jammers to help assist their delivery of a Unity built platformer that they had designed the night before called "Tough Crow'd". It was a great experience working with fellow game jammers I'd never worked or met with before and we were happy to have a submission by the following day before the 5pm Central deadline. Appreciate them letting me join and contribute to their idea, it was definitely a challenge building everything without source control 😅. Here is a link to the itch.io game upload from one of my teammates if you'd like to play our game: https://abprice.itch.io/tough-crow-d
Just a word of caution, it's pretty tough! The goal is to collect all 9 fruits without being hit by spawned balloons - each hit will cost you one of your 3 lives! There's a brief information scene if you click the eye located on the upper right corner of the main menu. Good luck, crow!
If you've ever been on the fence about entering a game jam, please take the leap of faith and do it! It can be a great way to network & meet like minded people, refine some of your skills, learn how to compromise to deliver, and challenge yourself. I'll might (theme and time permitting) be entering a new solo developer game jam later this month hosted by a youtube content creator: https://youtu.be/uqI9EoAWeUE?si=o-W7vdfgv9Sh3SJm
If you have a game jam you're hosting, or attending and want some additional help, let me know so we can try to collaborate.
Until next time, game on!
